everal years ago during the Year 2000 ("y2k"), I was driving a truck for a local food distributor. During July that year, my boss asked me to drop off coffee mugs to all of our customers. The mugs were pretty nice metal mugs - not the usual cheap plastic ones you see in all of the Truck Stops - they had our logo on them, along with our name, address, phone numbers and website.

At one of the stops, I dropped off some mugs with the lady at the Receiving Desk. I was fond of her and always took extra time to chat every time I stopped there. We talked about everything from shopping to kids to the weather--and of course--the trucking industry. She thanked me for the mugs, and smiled with the usual sparkle in her eyes. I realized that day as I pulled out onto the street I had a crush on her!

From that day, I thought of her constantly as I drove all over the State. I seriously looked forward to going back to talk to her again. I had it (the crush) bad... almost like an infection!

I thought of calling her from my cell phone--but I didn't want to seem "forward", so I played it cool. Besides, I was always on the road, and it didn't seem fair and... well, I would be going back soon!

Finally, about a month later in August, my schedule brought me back into her office. As I walked in, I saw the gleaming mug perched on the shelf behind her. I blurted out without thinking, "Nice mug!" and immediately I saw she was embarrassed. I felt it too--I turned red - and wished I could run out of there!

But in that awkward moment, something special happened. My feelings for her changed from liking her with a fond school-kid crush to a genuine godly love. It must have been a divine appointment, because this shy trucker found himself asking her for a date.

And she accepted!

We were married a year later on that same day in August. We chose to do our vows from our heart, and at the end of her wonderful words about me, she stopped, and said with a giggle, "Oh, and by the way, nice mug!"

Then our flower girl brought up a shining coffee mug with our picture on it, our names and the wedding date. Our Pastor held it and smiled. He improvised and said, "May this cup be a symbol of your commitment to each other--always fill it with love, joy and peace that only God can bring!"
